From tiny dancers to competitive teens, MSDA offers 22+ dance styles for ages 2.5–18 across our Providence and Baxter locations.
Year-Round Classes
Offered throughout the fall and spring season at our Providence and/or Baxter locations.
Acro
An acrobatic style class that teaches floor gymnastics, progressing from forward rolls and cartwheels to advanced tumbling including aerial work. Teachers work with each student on their individual level. This class also focuses on flexibility, agility, and teamwork. All students taking this class must participate in recital due to tricks and partner work.
Ballet
Divided into 6 levels (Pre-Ballet to Ballet V), students are placed by skill level. Younger students are encouraged to take a Combo Tap/Ballet class. New students should contact the office for an evaluation appointment for levels II–V.
Broadway Heels
For the dancer who is interested in taking jazz technique to the next level. Concentrates on teaching students to dance smoothly in character shoes ("heels") used in musicals and Broadway shows—perfect for the dancer who wants to pursue musical theater.
Hip-Hop / Funk
An upbeat style of dance performed to popular music. Although Hip-Hop's roots came from urban street dancing, it has become increasingly popular in the entertainment world. Funk dancing is the perfect fusion of styles, incorporating jazz roots into a melting pot of Hip-Hop, break, popping & locking, along with other fashionable dance genres.
Jazz
A style of dance structured in technique while taking many shapes and forms. It can be performed to a vast variety of music styles from Broadway to pop.
Jazz & Tumble
A combination of beginner tumbling with various acrobatic skills followed by an upbeat jazz/hip-hop class. Students will have no recital dance for tumbling but will perform a jazz dance in the recital.
Jazz & Hip-Hop
Combines the upbeat dancing style of hip-hop with the technique of jazz. All music selections and dance moves are age-appropriate.
Leaps & Turns
Baxter OnlyDesigned for students who want to improve the technique of their leaps and turns. Turns include en dehors and en dedans pirouettes, various turn progressions, and fouetté turns. Leaps include grand jeté, sauté chat, center leaps, switch leaps, and reverse leaps.
Lyrical / Contemporary
Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques that uses dramatic motion to interpret music and express emotion. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several genres including Modern, Jazz, Lyrical, and Ballet.
Modern
Baxter OnlyIncorporates movement from the techniques of Ballet, Cunningham, Graham, Horton, and Limón to engage and strengthen core muscles. Designed to increase flexibility and bring a sense of connection between mind and body.
Mommy & Me
Providence OnlyStructured to stimulate coordination skills, listening skills, balance, music interpretation, creative movement, and motor development in our youngest dancers. Moms wear comfortable clothing; young dancers wear a leotard, tights, and pink ballet shoes.
Musical Theater
Incorporates a combination of jazz and acting. Students work through jazz technique while portraying a character, using songs from Broadway to focus on bringing out their inner actor or actress.
Pointe & Pre-Pointe
The ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet in special box-toed pointe shoes, creating the appearance of weightlessness. Students are recommended for pointe based on age and ability. A minimum of two regular ballet classes must be attended to dance en pointe, one of which must be the ballet class directly before the pre-pointe or pointe class. There is no recital for Pre-Pointe classes.
Poms
A movement-based class that focuses on sharp arm movements, execution of choreographic visuals, and dance team/cheer skills.
Tap
A percussive style of dancing. Its name comes from the tapping sound made when the metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard surface. Younger students are encouraged to take a combination class (see Tap & Ballet Combo).
Tap & Ballet Combo
Teaches the fundamentals of tap and ballet. Students begin with tap and finish with ballet, arriving in tap shoes (teachers assist with shoe changes). Young combo students should wear a pull-up if they are not potty trained.
Tumbling
Teaches the basics of floor tumbling including forward rolls, back bends, cartwheels, and fundamental acrobatic strengthening and coordinating skills. There is no recital for Tumbling classes.
Summer-Only Classes
Offered exclusively during our summer program to help dancers deepen skills and explore new styles during the break.
Aerials & Back Handsprings
Designed for students already close to completing an aerial and/or back handspring, or those who want to continue mastering these tricks. Prerequisites: a cartwheel from the knee on the dominant side, and front and back walkovers on both sides with no spotter.
Balances & Contortion
Works on tricks including chin stands, chest stands, elbow stands, head stands, shoulder stands, handstands, partner balances, standing splits, arrows, perches, and more. Prerequisites: standing back bend and standing up from back bends with no spotter.
Conditioning
Includes core strengthening and cardiovascular exercises to strengthen different parts of the body and increase stamina. Take this class to supplement Extreme Stretch and Stretch & Strengthen classes. All levels welcome.
Contemporary Composition & Improvisation
Structured improvisation and contemporary combinations and choreography combined to become a routine. Dancers explore their own movement and choreography, levels, space, partnering, and relationship to each other.
Extreme Stretch / Legs & Feet / Contortion
Designed for a dancer looking to become more flexible. The instructor gives exercises for the student to practice at home, with each class potentially focusing on a different area or body part. All levels and ages welcome.
Improvisation
Exploration and freedom of movement, spatial awareness, and structured creativity with choreography. Encompasses several styles of dance and experimenting with props. All levels welcome.
